Artist Statement
I’m inspired by philosophical ideas concerning digitality and abstraction’s uneasy relationship to the decorative. My paintings—geometric and highly structured—recall the information architecture of online spaces. Whimsical squiggly lines intersect grid formations, suggesting shifts in being and movement while alluding to the permeable boundary between digital and analog. At the same time, motifs derived from textiles, architecture, and tilework are reinterpreted as a challenge to pejorative connotations associated with the decorative. Oriented as vertical rectangles, my paintings intimate screens, windows, or perhaps playing cards as overlapping shapes and patterns create an embodied optical experience and invite limitless associations to things beyond sight.
